Your Security System

What Happens to Your Alarm During an Outage?

Power and internet outages affect security systems differently. Here's what to expect, and where the gaps usually are.

Power outage

Your alarm panel switches to its backup battery and stays armed for several hours, depending on the panel, the battery's age and how many devices it powers.

Cameras, NVR/DVR recorders, routers and Wi-Fi gear usually shut off unless they're on a battery backup (UPS).

After power returns, a beeping keypad usually means the battery is recharging or needs replacement.

Internet / phone outage

If your alarm reports to the monitoring center over the internet, or over a phone line from Optimum or Fios, it can't send signals while that service is down.

Systems with a cellular communicator keep reporting over the cellular network, so monitoring continues.

Remote camera viewing won't work while your internet is out, even if the cameras are still recording locally.

Be Ready

Outage-Proof Your Security System

A few upgrades close the gaps most Long Island homes and businesses have during storms.

  • Cellular communicator: keeps monitoring live when Optimum or Fios goes down.
  • Fresh panel battery: alarm batteries weaken with age; replace before storm season.
  • UPS for cameras & NVR: keeps recording through short power outages.
  • Battery backup for your modem/router: keeps Wi-Fi devices and remote viewing up longer.
  • Provider alerts: sign up for PSEG MyAlerts and Optimum or Fios service alerts.
  • Keep CWC's number handy: 516-889-3600 for service after an outage.

Not sure your system has cellular backup?

CWC Security can check your panel, battery and communicator, and tell you exactly what stays protected when the power or internet goes out.

FAQ

Outage FAQs

Does my alarm system still work during a power outage?

Yes, for a while. Alarm control panels have a backup battery that keeps the system armed and reporting for several hours, depending on the panel, the age of the battery and how many devices it powers. Cameras, NVRs and Wi-Fi equipment usually go down unless they're on a battery backup (UPS). If an outage runs long, call CWC at 516-889-3600.

Will my alarm reach the monitoring center if my Optimum or Verizon Fios internet is down?

Only if your system has a cellular communicator. Systems that report over the internet, or over a phone line provided by your cable or fiber company, can't reach the central station while that service is down. A cellular communicator sends signals over the cellular network instead, so monitoring continues during internet outages.

How do I report a power outage to PSEG Long Island?

Call PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0075, use the PSEG Long Island app, or text OUT to PSEGLI (773454) after registering for MyAlerts. The live outage map is at outagemap.psegliny.com. For downed wires, stay away and call 911 or PSEG Long Island.

How do I check for an Optimum or Verizon Fios outage?

For Optimum, visit optimum.net/support/outage and sign in, or call (866) 950-3278. For Verizon Fios, use verizon.com/support/residential/service-outage, the My Fios app, or call 1-800-837-4966. If your home internet is down, open these on your phone's cellular data.

My alarm is beeping after the power came back. What should I do?

Beeping after an outage is usually a low-battery or AC-power trouble signal. The battery often recharges within about 24 hours once power is restored. If the trouble doesn't clear, or the battery is several years old, call CWC Security at 516-889-3600 to schedule a battery check.
