Keeping your smoke alarms working year-round

A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all. It only works when properly installed and regularly tested — here's how to keep yours reliable.

Battery-powered smoke alarm (9-volt)

• Test the alarm monthly.
• Replace the battery at least once a year.
• Replace the entire smoke alarm every 10 years.

10-year lithium ("long-life") battery alarm

Since the lithium battery cannot (and should not) be replaced, replace the entire smoke alarm according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Hardwired smoke alarm

Replace the backup battery at least once a year.

Test battery-powered alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly. All smoke alarms — battery or hardwired — should be fully replaced every 10 years regardless of alarm type.
